Winter Fly Fishing in Charleston SC

Fly Fishing Charleston SC during the winter months can be some of the most prodcutive sight fishing of the year.  Focusing 2-3 hours on either side of the low tide allows the angler to have the best opportunity for seeing Redfish cruising the mud flats in search of small baitfish.  Looking for a late morning to early afternoon low tide allows the mud flats to warm in the high sun.  When these flats become warmer, the fish will come out of the deeper pockets of water to warm themselves and also to feed on small mud minnows, mullet and other small baitfish.

Winter Fly Fishing in Charleston SC is highly dependent on weather, as is most all sight fishing scenarios, however, during the winter months we really need to have clear skies and high sun.  Similarly, low winds are very helpful to allow the angler the chance to fish the big river mud flats.  The Redfish are schooled up throughout the winter months here in Charleston, mostly to defend themselves in numbers from Bottlenose Dolphins. The Dolphins do not have as many baitfish to choose from while the water temperatures are below 60 degrees, so they will seek out the smaller Redfish to prey on.  Often times, and especially when the wind is blowing, Captain Braden Powell will sneak into small feeder creeks at low tide to find Redfish all the way in the back of the creek trying to stay warm and feeding on baitfish that are also congregated there.
