We have had some great fishing throughout the end of May and June as we near the end of the month. Captain Braden Powell and FishWater Outfitters have been busy focusing most of the time on early morning tides. This time of year as the air and water temperatures really start to heat up, we focus mostly on early mornings before the heat sets in. The exception however, is for our evening flood tides. Seeing the Redfish tailing in the grass as the sun is setting is well worth the heat!
Captain Braden Powell and Charleston, SC fly fishing guides have been seeing a lot of tailing Redfish on the incoming tide. As the water reaches around 4′ and the soft muddy edges of flats where there is plenty of sparse grass start to fill in, the Redfish follow the water in search of Fiddler Crabs. These small crabs are very sought after and the perfect meal for a hungry Redfish. During low tide, when you see soft muddy areas without oysters, there will be thousands of fiddler crabs there and the Redfish will follow the water to eat them. Captain Braden has been using small crab patterns such as the Drumbeater and Strong Arm crab patterns as well others that he ties.
As we continue to move into the summer months, Captain Braden Powell and Charleston, SC fly fishing guides will continue to fish the early mornings and the late evening flood tides. In addition to fly fishing for Redfish, FishWater Outfitters will also start to search for Jack Crevalle in the Charleston harbor and Tarpon that are migrating through. Having the opportunity to hook into a big Jack or Tarpon during the summer months adds a new level of excitement to Charleston, SC fly fishing.
