The Spring time months here in Charleston, SC can be very frustrating at times and also have such good fishing at other times. Our coastal weather patternsare typically all over the place in March and the first few weeks of April. We will have days in the mid eighties with minimal wind and then the next day it will be fifty degrees with 15-20 mph from the Northeast. When the weather stays consistent for a few days in a row, the Redfish will settle in and start feeding again happily.
As we get closer to the end of April our weather patterns have typically settled and we have consistent warmer trends. This allows the water temperature to get over 70 degrees and with that comes more bait and shrimp in the marsh. The fiddler crabs have come back at this point as well and the Redfish get fired up to eat! Myself and our Charleston, SC fly fishing guides will begin to target Redfish on all stages of the tides instead of focusing primarily around the low tide. As the water levels rise, the Redfish will continue to follow the water into the grass and will allow us as anglers to have sight fishing opportunities at floating fish. Once we get to the end of April and especially into May is when we will begin fishing the Flood Tides. Watching Redfish tail in the Spartina Grass can be one of the most exhilarating ways to catch a fish while fly fishing in Charleston, SC.
